Obituary for Violet E. Cardiff

Violet E. Cardiff, 97, of North Huntingdon, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at LGAR Health and Rehab. She was born, July 1, 1921 in North Braddock, a daughter of the late Joseph and Eva Metz. Prior to her retirement, Violet was a seamstress and a member of Grace Baptist Church, Monroeville. Violet had many joys in life including her family, cleaning, babysitting (until she was 92), church, and playing games. But her faith in God was quite evident as she would spend countless hours praying for everyone and thanking God for all His blessings even when facing difficult situations. Grandma (as she was called by all) valued her family and instilled many family traditions. One of her favorite traditions was making her homemade noodles to perfection for family holidays. She never missed sending a birthday or Christmas card, and she never missed calling on your birthday. Violet never missed a spring or fall cleaning. In fact, in her younger years she cleaned in her pearls and high heels. While doing her cleaning she often called her family. Grandma (GG) took her games to heart and always played to win! Trouble, Old Maid, Scattegories, and Candyland were some of her favorites. She was so competitive that no game could be left unfinished. Once, while playing Trouble with her great-grandchildren, a power outage occurred. But the game had to be finished - so to the garage they went, and finished by using the headlights of her car! Not only did GG love to play games, she never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy. Violet also had an identical twin, Vera. Every Saturday the twins would get their hair set and curled together. They would often wear the same clothes, unplanned. Violet and Vera enjoyed phone conversations nightly and were often snacking on the same food while talking. They were inseparable until the end. The most important value in life was her faith in God. She would never miss a Sunday service. Through all of the heartache in her life, her faith in God never wavered. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Cardiff; son, Charles Cardiff; daughter, Shirley Beavers; brothers, Joseph and Wilbur Metz; sisters, Vera Bielhart, Ethel McLauglin and Dorothy Metz; and great-grandchildren, Tami and Sarah. She is survived by her son, Ken Cardiff; grandchildren, Sheri, Bobby, Jeff, Lorie, Ken, Mark, Stephen and Brian; great-grandchildren, Jodi, D.J., Jessica, Bobby, James, Eddie, Nikki, Anna Lee, Jake, Josie, Molly, Ben, Jack, Scarlett, Vienna and Katrina; and great-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Calli, Colton, Jaxson and Reagan. Friends will be received at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, on Tuesday 6-8 p.m., and Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Grace Baptist Church, 4518 Northern Pike, Monroeville, PA. PLEASE GO DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH. Interment in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bell Fund/Grace Baptist Church. www.shirleyfuneralhome.com.
